Why do I get sore?

One question that comes through everyone's mind at least once is, why am I sore? Is it because I slept funny? Did I do too much the day before?

Everyone’s body is different and we all use our body in slightly different ways making those questions sometimes hard to answer. A person's loading capacity is vital in answering these questions, as everyone has a different loading capacity. You might now be asking what is a loading capacity? Well it indicates how much a person’s body can handle everyday tasks. There are many different types of loads that people take on in their day to day lives;

Postural loading: this includes being stationary for a while, whether that is sitting or standing for longer periods of time.

Active loading: this includes going to the gym, doing weights or participating in active sports such as swimming and running. Also if you worked in a job where you were lifting and moving heavy items regularly throughout your day you would be active loading.

These sorts of loading can sometimes overwork your muscles, especially if it is repeated movements, or if the load changes to something your body isn’t used to. This can create that soreness you feel in your body, and here at Fieldwork we can help prevent that without stopping what is causing that. When we create that care plan for you we can include different stretches that might help as well as muscle releases throughout your massage.

How does massage help?

Massage is a great tool to help our bodies overcome stiffness, and any aches or niggles it might be encountering, regular massages can be even better!

Regular massages can help increase your loading capacity meaning you have the ability to do more, whether that be in your regular day to day activities, or for a more focused increase in sports or workout routine.

They help get rid of the built up tension in our bodies that might be preventing you from doing day to day tasks, they are also great for a mental break as in that hour you will be able to rest and calm down your nervous system. Meaning that they are not only helping your physical health but also your mental health. Giving the body the reset it needs in order to help you with overall wellness while also removing any soreness and also preventing injury.

How often do I need a massage?

The amount of massages you need varies from person to person, it depends on many factors including your body and your goals. A good guide to base your decision off is that if you are at the gym 5-7 times a week, doing high performance training you may need weekly or fortnightly massages. If you are active, going to the gym a couple times a week, you would look at more of a monthly massage. For low activity, you might be able to get away with having a massage every 6 weeks. When you come in you will work with your massage therapist and discuss what timing best suits you, your needs and your schedule.
