Neural sensitivity and nerve pain are more common then you think!

Neural sensitivity can happen to anyone.  It generally happens when the nerve is stressed or blocked in some way.  The good news is that it is treatable by a trained Physiotherapist in conjunction with your health team.

What do I feel if I get nerve pain?

There are what is called "positive symptoms" and "negative symptoms" that can happen with nerve pain.  Positive symptoms generally mean the nerve may be inflamed but sending "normal" signals.  Negative symptoms can mean that the nerve is blocked or compressed.

Positive Symptoms:

  • Pain

  • Pins and needles

  • Burning

  • Increased sensitivity to "normal" sensations

 Negative Symptoms:

  • Numbness

  • Weakness

  • Lost reflexes

  • Parasthesia

What can you do to help my nerve pain?

Physiotherapy is effective at treating nerve pain that stems from irritation or compression.  Some Physiotherapists even treat conditions such as phantom limb pain and chronic regional pain syndrome using special techniques called cognitive behavioral therapy.

Nerve irritation or compression can be treated by more conventional means using appropriate neural mobilisations and liaising with your health team to achieve the best outcome.

Some conditions we treat:

  • Sciatica

  • Carpal Tunnel

  • Referral Pain

  • Chronic Pain

  • Stenosis

  • Restless Legs

How can nerve treatment work for me?

Nerve treatment works by desensitizing the nerve and making the environment around it back to normal.

First you need to work out why you have nerve pain, make a plan, treat the cause and give solutions to fix the issue.

Most people who have nerve sensitivity commonly ask us a few things:

  • "I keep getting treatment but it doesn't do anything"

  • "The pain keeps coming back"

  • "I feel restless when I sleep"

  • "I just can't get comfortable"
