Non-Surgical Approach to a Torn ACL

ACL

The non-surgical or conservative approach involves an evidence-based program to restore normal muscle function and return to gym, field based sports and other sporting environments.

The rehabilitation process really is very similar to that of a surgical pathway, however time frames are expected to be faster. This is due there is no need to recover from surgery, or  have to be mindful of the graft.

The same principles and pathways that are done for surgical repair are also used for this conservative approach.

  • Reducing pain and effusion

  • Restoring ROM

  • Regaining muscle strength

  • Function and movement patterns.

One of the main benefits of undergoing the non- surgical pathway is there is no need to wait for tissue healing time-frames or have restrictions with knee range/weight bearing status, as there has been no surgery undertaken. Rehab can start straight away and will be guided by your physiotherapist.

If you are interested in discussing this conservative approach or want to book in with our ACL specialist Matt, feel free to call us at 08 6468 6825 or click here to book online.

End stage physiotherapy to return to sport includes a graduated return to acceleration, agility, coordination, balance, endurance and sport-specific skills.

Return to training and play time frames will differ based on the person and the sport itself.

Post successful return to play, follow-up sessions are crucial for ongoing support and ensure continued compliance with preventative exercises.

Each person should have an informed choice first if they want to go down the conservative or surgical pathways. The person should have a collaboration with their medical team.
